He shoots and scores!

Well, today is truely a sad day. I meant to post today about how much fun we had at the annual Garness Family Campout, but I think I will leave that to my wife.

Today, a legend has passed. Herb Brooks, MN native, and architect of the single greatest sporting achievment, the 1980 Gold Medal Hockey team, was tragically killed in a one car accident just north of the Twin Cities. Being a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, this is hard. Herb has been an employee of the Penguins for many years now as a scout. He even coached the team in 2000 to the second round of playoffs. But as a native of Minnesota, this is truely crushing. This man has done more for hockey in Minnesota than almost any one man. When people talk of hockey in the state of Minnesota, two names usually come up, John Marriucci and Herb Brooks. A member of the 1980 hockey team was from my hometown of Babbitt, MN so everybody knew who Herb Brooks was. The hockey world has truely lost one of it's greatest ambassadors and champions. Rest in peace Herbie.

PS: In what can only be described as tragic irony, HBO had their special on the 1980 Hockey team on today, "Miracle on Ice". It was scheduled and not on because of what happend today. I watched it, and am not ashamed to admit, I shed some tears while watching it. Truely a sad day for all of Minnesota.
